MCCGJA Meeting Minutes
BOS chambers - 4/19/07

Members Present: Betty Mattea, President; Shelly Wolff, Vice President; Catherine McKown, Secretary; Irwin Taranto, Treasurer; Dennis Brown, Gene Dyer, Ted Freeman, Owen Haxton, Karin Hern, Al Lozano, and Lowell Smith.

President Mattea called the meeting to order at 9:36 a.m.

Approval of Agenda and Approval of Minutes - M/S: Both approved

Announcement: No video of Sounding Board program due to complications.

Report from Foreperson - Karin Hern: The jury is sending out a report today: Health and Human Services (3) Environment and Trans (1-2), Admin and Finance (3) Law and Justice (1-2), Education (1).
Karin spoke about her wonderful trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos. She said it's a great jury: the investigators and authors. Question from membership about the concept of one topic (Zepp) - Karin said it depends on the topic. Discussion of Continuity issue whether the Court appoints us or a panel. The Continuity Committee drafted a letter to Kim Turner and sent a draft of it to Karin for her input.

Treasurer's Report - Irwin Taranto says the chapter has $5,354.38 which includes $375 from the reunion luncheon, as a partial deposit. He stated, "We're in decent shape."

CGJA business - Taranto: The Conference Committee is designing a brochure for the conference. Haven't, as yet, decided on content. Plans are coming along. On the Board, there is a lot of discussion about policies and procedures. The Board will be meeting on May 11-12 in Sacramento. The training program is in great shape; everyone is happy with it. Ted Freeman and Catherine McKown will be part of the Training Committee's workshop for trainers in Sacramento on May 10-11.

Membership - Owen Haxton: Membership is stagnant; haven't acquired any new members for chapter or CGJA. Re. reunion - all checks go to Ann Marie - 38 have signed up so far. He went year by year to see who was coming.

Nomination Committee - Al Lozano handed the report off to Ted Freeman - The Nomination Committee has nominated one candidate for each office as follows:

President: Betty Mattea
Vice President: Catherine McKown
Secretary: Myra Berkowitz
Treasurer: Irwin Taranto
Directors at Large: Neil Kugelmas, Owen Haxton, and Gene Dyer

Who do we want to run for CGJA office (July/August)? - Proposal to reduce number on Board from 24 to 12 members has been withdrawn. Former jurors interview prospective jurors in SF.

President's Report - Betty Mattea: Gil Murphy (97/98; 98/99) passed away (Monday IJ) - Jack Friesen will speak about him at reunion. Sounding Board has the ability to train and loan the equipment to film … to be shown on cable. Suggestion: perhaps do this at Conference in San Francisco. Chapter is not involved in annual Conference. Film it, live streaming, Conference Committee does have Barbara Taylor (KCBS) to lead a panel about relationship with the media. Gene would be willing to help Bob Abeling. Marin Chapter will indicate willingness to help.

Telephone Tree - Al has contacted the people on the list he was given, and he spoke to 98% of them; Owen described those he contacted.

Reunion Guests and VIPs - Patrick Faulkner and Jeanine Michaels were also invited to attend the reunion. VIPs: Judi Lazenby, Jack Zepp, and Brad Breithaupt (principal speaker from the IJ).

Subjects not on Agenda - Gene Dyer: Got correspondence from the Orange County GJ re. our manual. Other counties publish their manuals. Motion to send electronic copy to Orange Co. OK to make public to association members. M/S - Irwin to set up separately to send it to her electronically with a cover letter that the manual is being updated and not for public consumption. Passed

May 21 - Karin Hern updates of reports
June 21 - Don McEnhill (96/97) Mission of league of Women Voters + current issues.

Meetings in July/August? - no speakers for these two months. M/S - Passed
Lowell will get a speaker for September.

The meeting was adjourned in memory of Gil Murphy at 10:42 a.m.
